What type of poems does Kenn Nesbitt write? ›

He is a writer of humorous poetry for children, including the books My Hippo Has the Hiccups and Revenge of the Lunch Ladies. Nesbitt has collaborated with poet Linda Knaus on a collection of Christmas poems entitled Santa Got Stuck in the Chimney and with children's musician Eric Herman on several CDs.

Try writing down your thoughts about the topic in just a few lines or words. You can then write a list of words, phrases, or metaphors that relate to your topic. Arrange your thoughts in a way that sounds good to you (it doesn't have to rhyme), then try reading your poem out loud.

Children's poems tell little stories or highlight moments of life. The best poems evoke strong visual images or emotions. If your poem is funny (children love humorous poetry) give it a punch line at the end that surprises the reader. Don't try to do too much with a poem.

A fable is a story in prose or verse that often arrives at a moral. Fables typically use personification (link to that term in the glossary?) featuring animals that speak and act like human beings in order to demonstrate a lesson about human behavior.

Sensory Poems follow a simple outline of choosing a topic (experience, item, location, season, emotion, color, or food) and describing it through the five senses: sight, touch, smell, sound, and taste. Sensory Poems are six lines long, usually do not rhyme, and often contain similes.

'The Peace of Wild Things' is a free verse poem, a single stanza of 11 lines. In total there are five sentences, the first five lines being the longest and the last line the shortest.

'The Arrow and the Song' by Henry Wadsworth Longfellow is a three-stanza poem that is divided into sets of four lines, known as quatrains. These quatrains follow a simple rhyme scheme of AABB CCDD EEFF. The stanzas are divided into two couplets (sets of two lines) that create a very steady rhythm in the piece.
