Do bathing suits run small or big? ›

Wear Dark Colored Swimsuits

Roll the swimsuit in a terrycloth towel to absorb excess water or simply hang it to air-dry in a spot with good air circulation, away from direct sunlight, which can cause colors to fade. Add a circulating fan to speed drying. Skip the dryer because high temperatures can permanently damage the fabric.

Consider the type of fabric used in the bikini. Some fabrics, like spandex or elastane blends, have stretch and may allow you to size down slightly without sacrificing comfort. However, natural fibers like cotton may not be as forgiving, so you might prefer a truer size.

Mulholland suggests washing swimsuits roughly every three to five wears. There is one occasion when it's beneficial to wash immediately. The ProSwimwear site suggests using a mild soap as soon as you're out of chlorinated water. Chlorine that is not washed away with soap can eat away at your suit, degrading the fabric.

Like many other items of clothing, over time your swimsuit will loosen with wear, so it's important that it fits close to the body to begin with. It should wrap around the body smoothly and should mould to your natural shape without any pinching, sagging or wrinkling of the fabric.

A properly fitting swimsuit should fit closely against your body. Bunching at the seams or tightness and pulling at the straps and openings usually indicates an incorrect size. You should be able to move freely without causing the neck or leg openings of the suit to stretch.
